In my own life and practice,
I have gained a new sense of hope, energy, and gratitude through the foundational concept of Healing Intelligence. I have been able to resurrect the passion and drive that encourages me to care for patients and their families as my best self. I have provided presentations on these ideas to my colleagues, and am honored to share my story of lessons learned from the thousands of patients who have visited my exam room, people who have trusted their care to me. From them, I have learned so much about compassion, communication, and how to heal intelligently.

Communication in a medical setting must be more than questions, answers, and diagnoses passed between doctor and patient. Authentic, meaningful, and clear communication can only occur within a network that includes the patient, the patient’s family, and medical professionals in a mutual and ongoing conversation.
Empathetic, authentic communication is too often considered inefficient or unprofessional in a medical setting; it takes time, and requires an emotional investment that can’t be accounted for with a billing code. But during my decades-long career as a physician and practice owner — and with my experiences with my own illness and those of my family members — I’ve become convinced that meaning-rich, multi-directional communication is the key to better outcomes for patients and their caregivers.
